SD-WAN solutions owe their emergence, in particular, to the widespread use of clouds. Today we will tell you why companies are implementing this technology, what benefits it provides, and for whom it is especially relevant.
How SD-WAN Solutions Came to Be
Previously, when cloud services simply did not exist, companies hosted IT infrastructure and business applications in their own data centers and server rooms. Dedicated communication channels — MPLS — were used to organize access to data from remote branches. At the same time, users from offices “on the periphery” did not have a direct connection to the Internet, and got into the general networks through the central IT site, even if it was located several thousand kilometers away.
After the emergence of the cloud services market, companies began to move business applications to virtual environments of providers. To access them, they no longer used MPLS, but Internet channels. Among other things, the requirements for speed and bandwidth also grew. For old applications, this approach could remain working, but with the advent of real-time services and videoconferencing tools, it became obvious that something needed to change.

So, expensive MPLS channels no longer meet the rapidly growing business requirements, but they cannot be completely replaced by Internet channels, since such a connection does not guarantee the quality of service. What to do?
In response to the urgent market demand for a new way to organize a corporate network, SD-WAN solutions began to appear. For quite a long time, they remained the domain of startups that developed them. However, thanks to the emergence of industry giants on wordpress web design agency this market — for example, VMware and Cisco, which acquired specialized SD-WAN startups and included them in their service portfolios — the solutions got rid of many “teething problems” and became interesting to businesses. VMware SD-WAN: What it consists of
The solution consists of three key components.
VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator
De facto, the orchestrator is a system for managing a distributed SD-WAN network in the format of a convenient web portal. Through it, you can launch virtual network services in any of the connected branches, the virtual infrastructure of a service provider or a corporate data center in a couple of seconds. Its functions also include:
monitoring;
Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP) — thanks to this feature, an employee without expertise in network technologies and deep technical knowledge can handle the activation of VMware SD-WAN Edge in a connected branch;
network diagnostics;
event logging;
automation via REST API.
VMware SD-WAN Gateway
Gateways are network gateways located in data centers around the world. Their primary purpose is to provide users from geographically remote branches with an optimal path to corporate services and data.
